Minnesota HF 5160 — Ownership, possession, and sale of semiautomatic military-style assault weapons and large-capacity magazines regulated; provisions for possessing dangerous weapons in schools, negligently storing firearms, and reporting on firearms discharge by law enforcement modified; other firearm provisions modified; and money appropriated.
Threat level: green
Minnesota omnibus gun bill (companion to HF 5140) focused mainly on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines. For airsoft, it would have dropped the principal's-written-permission exception for replica firearms and BB guns on school property and extended the school-property rule to High School League event venues; existing penalties would not change.
Bill summary
Omnibus gun-safety bill (companion/revised version of HF 5140) focused mainly on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines. It also amends Minnesota's school-property weapons statute. It would not change the existing penalties for replica firearms and BB guns on school property, which are already law: using or brandishing one is a gross misdemeanor, and possessing one is a misdemeanor. The changes that matter for airsoft: it would remove the exception that allows BB guns or replica firearms on school property with the principal's written permission, and it would extend "school property" to buildings hosting Minnesota State High School League events where signs are posted. Minnesota's "replica firearm" definition covers airsoft guns. HF 5160 was introduced May 17, 2026, in the final days of the session, and referred to the House Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee. The 94th Legislature adjourned in May 2026 without acting on it, and the bill died.
