Minnesota SF 5210 — School Safety Plans Enhancement

Threat level: green

School-safety package carrying the same school-property weapons changes as SF 4067. For airsoft, it would have dropped the principal's-written-permission exception for replica firearms and BB guns and extended the school-property rule to High School League event venues; existing penalties would not change.

Bill summary

School-safety package that carries the same school-property weapons changes as SF 4067. It would not change the existing penalties for replica firearms and BB guns on school property, which are already law: using or brandishing one is a gross misdemeanor, and possessing one is a misdemeanor. The changes that matter for airsoft: it would remove the exception that allows BB guns or replica firearms on school property with the principal's written permission, and it would extend "school property" to buildings hosting Minnesota State High School League events where signs are posted. Minnesota's "replica firearm" definition covers airsoft guns. SF 5210 (Sen. Kunesh) was introduced April 23, 2026 and referred to the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, where it had no further action. The 94th Legislature adjourned in May 2026 without acting on it, and the bill died.
