Utah HB 0083 — Imitation Firearm Amendments
Threat level: yellow
Would have made it an infraction for a minor to carry or display in public a toy or look-alike gun altered to look real (for example, an airsoft gun with its orange tip removed) after a prior documented police warning. The bill did not pass.
Bill summary
Would have created a new infraction in Utah Code (Section 53-5a-109) for minors and "altered toy, look-alike, or imitation firearms": devices altered so a reasonable person would believe they are real guns, which can include airsoft guns with the orange tip removed or painted over. As introduced, a minor could be cited for knowingly possessing one in a public place after already receiving a documented warning from a law enforcement officer. A House amendment narrowed the offense from possessing the device to drawing or exhibiting it. HB 83 (Rep. Jake Fitisemanu) was introduced January 20, 2026 and amended in the House, but it did not pass before the 2026 General Session ended March 6, 2026.
